The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta on Torcello, an island in the Venetian lagoon, is one of the oldest religious buildings in the Veneto region, founded in 601. A notable example of Late Paleochristian architecture rendered in the Byzantine style, it served as the cathedral of the now-defunct Diocese of Torcello before being reduced to a minor basilica and parish church. The building is distinguished by containing some of the earliest mosaics in the Venice area and stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site component, testament to its significance as an ancient sacred structure.
