The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist in Toruń's Old Town is a Gothic brick cathedral with a monumental west tower, begun in 1401 and expanded across centuries until reaching its present form by the end of the 15th century. Originally a small, single-nave hall church of the 13th century, it was rebuilt as an aisled hall church in the early 14th century and underwent successive enlargements. The interior preserves rich medieval decoration, including 14th-century painted scenes of the Crucifixion and Last Judgement in the presbytery. A 13th-century baptismal font, traditionally associated with Nicolaus Copernicus, shares the cathedral with 16th- and 18th-century monuments to the astronomer. The tower supports Tuba Dei, Poland's third-largest bell, cast in 1500. The cathedral also held the heart of King John I Albert, who died in Toruń in 1501. Designated a Minor Basilica in 1935 and cathedral seat of the Diocese of Toruń since 1992, it stands as part of the UNESCO-listed Medieval Town of Toruń.
