Trani Cathedral, a minor basilica dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, stands in Trani in Apulia, south-eastern Italy, and is one of the main examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture. Begun in 1099 and consecrated in 1143, it is built of local calcareous tuff quarried from the city's caves, an extremely light pink, almost white stone. Its showy transept and high pointed arch beneath the bell tower, unusual in Romanesque building, set it apart.
