Upnor Castle is an Elizabethan artillery fort on the west bank of the River Medway in Kent, in the village of Upnor, opposite and a short distance downriver from Chatham Dockyard. Built between 1559 and 1567 on the orders of Elizabeth I, and designed by Richard Lee, it is constructed of rag-stone and brick. It was intended to protect the dockyard and Royal Navy ships anchored in the Medway, later became a naval ammunition depot, and is now an English Heritage property.
