Valencia Hall, a Victorian-era community center built around 1884 near Aptos in Santa Cruz County, California, stands as a modest but significant reminder of nineteenth-century industrial life. Constructed entirely of redwood by F.A. Hihn, the 30-by-40-foot structure was erected on Valencia Creek to serve as a gathering place for millhands and their families in a planned community. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, the hall exemplifies the period's commitment to providing social infrastructure for working communities.
