Ventspils Castle stands in the port city of Ventspils in the Courland region of Latvia, and is a national architectural monument. Dating from 1201, it is one of the oldest and best-preserved Livonian Order castles still standing, having kept its original layout since the 13th century. Over roughly 700 years it served as a fortress, residence, garrison, school, military base and prison. It was restored to its 19th-century appearance in 1995 and converted into a museum.
