Vianden Castle stands in the town of Vianden in northern Luxembourg and is one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine. Its origins reach back to a Roman outpost of the fourth century and a 10th-century predecessor, while the more familiar castle was built in the Romanesque style between the 11th and 14th centuries. After a Renaissance mansion was added in the 17th century, it fell into ruin before being fully restored and opened to visitors.
