Built between 1927 and 1935 in Vyborg during the period of Finnish sovereignty, this library stands as a seminal work of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto and a landmark example of 1920s functionalist design. Originally named Viipuri Library, the building is celebrated as one of the first manifestations of "regional modernism." Its most distinctive feature is the wave-shaped ceiling in the auditorium, which Aalto derived from acoustic studies. After Soviet annexation following the Second World War, the building underwent successive name changes before becoming known as the Central City Alvar Aalto Library. The structure underwent an extensive restoration lasting from 1994 to 2013, earning recognition with the World Monuments Fund / Knoll Modernism Prize in 2014 and the Europa Nostra Award in 2015.
