Wakkanai Lighthouse stands in the city of Wakkanai on Hokkaido, Japan. At 42.7 metres, it is the tallest lighthouse on the island and the second tallest in Japan. Its first lighthouse, built in 1900 in the hills above, was forced to relocate when the area was taken over for a US base. The tower was rebuilt to the same height at its present site in 1966. Its red and white stripes make it a symbol of Cape Noshappu, and the public can visit it from the start of Golden Week each year.
