Warwick Castle stands above the River Avon in Warwick, England. Begun in 1068 as a wooden motte-and-bailey fort built by William the Conqueror, it was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century, and its town-facing facade was refortified during the Hundred Years War, making it one of the most recognisable examples of 14th-century military architecture. James I granted it to Sir Fulke Greville in 1604, and it was converted into a country house.
