The Watervliet Arsenal, located on the west bank of the Hudson River in Watervliet, New York, is the oldest continuously active arsenal in the United States. Founded on July 14, 1813, to support the War of 1812, and formally designated by its present name in 1817, this 142-acre Neoclassical facility sits approximately eight miles north of Albany. Today it remains a major production center for the U.S. Army, manufacturing artillery, gun tubes for cannons, mortars, and tanks, and housing the Army's Combat Capabilities Development Command Benét Laboratories for artillery engineering research and testing. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966, the arsenal comprises manufacturing buildings, administrative offices, and storage areas that reflect its enduring military mission across two centuries.
