Wetzlar Cathedral stands in the town of Wetzlar on the Lahn river, about 50 km north of Frankfurt in Hesse, Germany. Construction began in 1230 and remains unfinished, as the western front still lacks its northern belfry. Its long building period brought together Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture. Despite its name, it has never been a bishop's seat; "Dom" here denotes a large church rather than a cathedral in the English sense, and the building has borne that name since the 17th century.
