Winchester Castle is a former royal residence in Winchester, Hampshire, England, founded in 1067 by William the Conqueror and now a scheduled monument. Much of it has been lost, but the Great Hall, regarded as one of the finest surviving medieval halls in England, houses a museum of Winchester's history and contains the so-called Round Table, a large wooden tabletop traditionally linked to Arthurian legend in later popular tradition. The Westgate, once the castle's principal defensive gateway, also survives.
