Castell y Bere stands near Llanfihangel-y-Pennant in Gwynedd, Wales, and is a scheduled monument and National Monument of Wales. Built by Llywelyn the Great in the 1220s to maintain his authority over the local people and defend the south-west of the princedom of Gwynedd, it fell to English forces in 1282. Edward I expanded it and founded a small town beside it, but it was besieged and apparently burnt during Madog ap Llywelyn's revolt in 1294. Left unrepaired, it became a ruin, and it is now cared for by Cadw as a tourist attraction.
