Located in Vienna's historic Innere Stadt district, the Zacherlhaus is a residential and commercial building designed by Jože Plečnik and constructed between 1903 and 1905. Commissioned by Johann Evangelist Zacherl, son of the insecticide magnate Johann Zacherl, this Art Nouveau structure stands at Brandstätte 6 on the Wildpretmarkt as one of the first modern buildings erected in that central Vienna location. The façade features polished grey granite plates and an artistically executed cornice; sculptural elements include Ferdinand Andri's figure of Archangel Michael and atlantes designed by Franz Metzner. An oval-shaped stairwell contains a lamp resembling an insect, a witty reference to the insecticide production that built the family's fortune. Severely damaged during World War II, the building was restored in 1949. Today a listed building and important example of the Otto Wagner-school, it serves as office space and remains in the hands of the Zacherl family.
