Zvíkov Castle, perched on a steep promontory above the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers near Písek in the South Bohemian Region, stands as one of the most important early-Gothic castles in Czech lands. Built in the first half of the 13th century, probably on the orders of King Ottokar I, the fortress first appears in written records in 1234 as a royal possession. Its commanding position on difficult-to-access terrain and its architectural significance have earned it the epithet "the king of Czech castles," and it is designated a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
