Zvolen Castle is a medieval fortress situated on a hill near the center of Zvolen in central Slovakia. Built between 1360 and 1382 as a hunting residence ordered by Louis I the Great, the castle replaced an earlier 12th-century seat at Pustý hrad due to that location's difficult access. Its original Gothic architecture drew inspiration from Italian castles of the fourteenth century, with Italian masons contributing to both the initial construction and a Renaissance reconstruction in 1548. The chapel underwent Baroque transformation during a major reconstruction in 1784. Today the castle houses a regional branch of the Slovak National Gallery, displaying old European masters including works by Rubens, Veronese, and Hogarth, and operates a popular tea room within its walls.
