This Grade II* listed apartment block at St James's Place in London's St James's district was designed by Denys Lasdun and Partners and completed in 1959–60, exemplifying mid-century British Brutalism with its reinforced concrete frame clad in Baveno grey granite and white vitreous mosaic soffits. The eight-flat building, engineered by Ove Arup and Partners, earned the RIBA London Architecture Bronze Medal in 1960. It occupies a historically significant site, replacing a house from circa 1692 that had been damaged during World War II bombing; that earlier structure had been rebuilt by Lieutenant-General Sir John Cope in 1745 and subsequently occupied by notable figures including Robert Smith, 1st Baron Carrington.
