Agrigento Cathedral in Sicily, dedicated to Saint Gerland, was founded in 1001 and consecrated in 1099 as the seat of the restored bishop of Agrigento. The structure embodies the architectural synthesis characteristic of medieval Sicily, blending Norman, Arab, and Byzantine influences with later Renaissance and Sicilian Baroque elements in the Chiaramonte style. Originally the cathedral of a restored diocese, it was elevated to metropolitan status when the diocese became an archdiocese in 2000, making it the seat of the Archbishop of Agrigento. The building holds the status of Italian national heritage and functions as a minor basilica and archives.
