Opened in 2013 in Akita, Japan, this prefectural art museum showcases the Masakichi Hirano Art Foundation's collection, notably featuring works by Tsuguharu Foujita alongside rotating exhibitions. Designed by acclaimed architect Tadao Ando, the striking triangular reinforced-concrete structure announces itself through a free-standing staircase and triangular skylight that orient visitors upon entry. Glass panels on the second floor frame views of adjacent Senshu Park, the former site of Akita Castle, while also enclosing the freely accessible café and museum shop—a design choice that integrates public and paid zones. The museum succeeded its predecessor, which had operated since 1967.
