The Hyōgo Prefectural Museum of Art, which opened in 2002 in Nada-ku, Kobe, is a purpose-built gallery designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando. The museum houses foreign and Japanese sculptures, prints, and paintings—with particular strength in Western-style and Japanese-style works connected to Hyogo Prefecture, as well as Japanese modernist and contemporary art. Dedicated galleries honor the European-trained modernist painters Ryōhei Koiso and Kanayama Heizō. The building itself was constructed and donated to the prefecture through Ando's Architectural Institute, embodying the architect's signature approach to museum design.
