The Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum opened in 2005 in Dejima-machi, designed by the architectural firms Nihon Sekkei and Kengo Kuma. The museum's collection centers on artworks related to Nagasaki's history alongside Spanish paintings assembled by Suma Yakichiro, who served as a special envoy to Spain during the Second World War. Its opening that year, concurrent with the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, marked the closure of the former Nagasaki Prefectural Museum and Art Museum, which had operated until the end of 2002.
