Completed in 2005, the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture was designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa to chronicle the city's singular role as Japan's portal to the outside world during centuries of national isolation. The museum holds 48,000 items—historical documents, artworks, and crafts—that trace Nagasaki's exchanges with the Netherlands, China, and Korea, and its encounter with Portuguese and Spanish culture and Christianity. A reconstructed section of the Edo-period Nagasaki Magistrate's Office anchors the permanent exhibition, which also documents the city's contributions to post-restoration Japan in diplomacy, medicine, printing, shipbuilding, and industrial technology. This remains one of Japan's few institutions dedicated to the theme of overseas exchange.
