Opened in 2001 in Ōsaka's Chūō-ku ward, the Osaka Museum of History was designed by César Pelli & Associates and Nihon Sekkei in collaboration with NTT Facilities. Connected via atrium to the adjacent NHK Osaka Broadcasting Center—built concurrently by the same architectural team—the museum replaced the city's former museum that same year. Spanning four floors, its displays chronicle Ōsaka's history from the era of the Former Naniwa Palace, whose remains (including warehouse structures, walls, and water supply facilities) are preserved and exhibited in the basement. The museum's collection grew substantially from approximately 100,000 objects in 2005 to over 138,000 by 2016, supplemented by an additional 17,632 items held on deposit.
