Designed by architect Paul Andreu with engineering by Arup and Tohata, the Osaka Maritime Museum opened on 14 July 2000 on reclaimed land in Osaka Bay. Built at a cost of 12.8 billion yen, the museum featured a distinctive dome engineered to withstand seismic, wave, and wind loads—an achievement that earned it a Structural Special Award from the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2002. Its centerpiece was a replica of the Naniwa Maru, an Edo period trading ship. Initially popular, the museum struggled with declining visitor numbers and closed on 10 March 2013 due to financial difficulties.
