Perched above the port city of Málaga in southern Spain, the Alcazaba is a palatial fortress built during the period of Muslim-ruled Al-Andalus, beginning in the 11th century. The complex underwent successive modifications and rebuilding through the 14th century, resulting in one of Spain's best-preserved examples of Moorish military architecture. A walled corridor connects the Alcazaba to the higher Castle of Gibralfaro, while near its entrance stand the remains of a Roman theatre from the 1st century AD, layering the site with centuries of Mediterranean history.
