The Castle of the Calatravos in Alcañiz, Teruel, originated in the twelfth century as a stronghold of the Order of Calatrava, the military order instrumental in reconquering the town in 1157. Its oldest rooms date to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, while the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries saw the addition of Mudéjar ornamentation to both the castle and its surrounding walls. The late-Renaissance main façade was added in the eighteenth century, reflecting the building's layered architectural evolution across Romanesque, Gothic, and Mudéjar styles. Since 1968, the castle has functioned as a Parador hotel, redesigned by Spanish architect José Luis Picardo, and is designated a bien de interés cultural.
