The Amistad Gymnasium in Amistad, New Mexico, is a historic community building constructed by the Works Progress Administration and completed in 1937. Proposed in 1935 as part of the WPA's Depression-era initiative to provide employment and civic infrastructure in rural areas, the gymnasium exemplifies the agency's approach of blending modernist design with regional architectural traditions. Its Pueblo Revival style with Art Deco influences reflects this synthesis, while two Zia sun symbols adorning the front mark its year of completion. The project generated approximately fifty construction jobs and quickly became a vital community hub, hosting dances, gatherings, and sporting events. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996 and is listed on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties.
