The Amphitheatre of Pompeii, located in the ancient city near Naples, stands as one of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres. Built in the distinctive style of ancient Roman architecture, it was preserved in a unique way when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, burying both Pompeii and the neighbouring town of Herculaneum under volcanic ash and stone. During excavations of the site, six bodies were discovered within the structure, offering glimpses into the lives of those caught in the catastrophe. Today it remains part of Italy's national heritage.
