The Colosseum is an enormous elliptical amphitheatre that stands in central Rome, just east of the Roman Forum. Built of travertine limestone, tuff, and Roman concrete, it rose to a height of 48 metres and could accommodate an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD under his successor Titus, with further modifications during the reign of Domitian; the three emperors of the Flavian dynasty lent their name to the structure, originally called the Flavian Amphitheatre. The building hosted gladiatorial combats, animal hunts, executions, battle reenactments, and mythological dramas before falling out of use for entertainment in the early medieval period. Though substantially damaged by earthquakes and stone robbers over centuries, it remains the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and stands as an enduring symbol of Imperial Rome, now serving as an Italian national museum and archaeological site.
