The Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico, a Beaux-Arts structure completed in 1917 at Avenida Ponce de León 1 in San Juan, was designed as a cultural haven for the island's elite, reflecting strong European architectural influences. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and the Puerto Rico Register of Historic Sites and Zones in 2000, the building served evolving institutional purposes throughout the twentieth century. After remaining vacant for a period, it housed the Escuela Libre de Música Ernesto Ramos Antonini during the mid-twentieth century, and by 1955 became the inaugural headquarters of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, a role it maintained until 1970.
