Ar Men, a stone lighthouse rising 37 meters on a rocky outcrop off the coast of Brittany, was designed by architect Léonce Reynaud and constructed between 1867 and 1881 on the Chaussée de l'Île de Sein. Its name—"the rock" in Breton—reflects its dramatic setting at the western edge of France, where it stands isolated in the Atlantic. The lighthouse gained renown not only for its austere beauty but for the extraordinary difficulties its builders faced and the treacherous conditions it presented to its keepers, earning it the grim distinction of being called "The Hell of Hells" due to severe exposure and dangerous evacuations. The structure was designated a classified historical monument in 2017.
