Archangel Michael's Church in central Turku, Finland, is a striking synthesis of Art Nouveau and Gothic Revival designed by Lars Sonck and completed in 1905. When Sonck won the design competition in 1894, he was merely a 23-year-old architectural student, a remarkable achievement that launched his career. The church dominates the western skyline of Turku and can accommodate 1,800 worshippers, making it one of the city's most popular venues for weddings. Now a protected church building, it predates even its own parish, which was not established until 1921.
