Turku Cathedral in Turku, Finland, is the only medieval basilica in the country and serves as the Mother Church of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Built beginning in 1300 out of brick in the Brick Gothic style, it rises to a height of 101.9 meters and stands in the heart of the city beside the Old Great Square along the river Aura. Originally constructed of wood in the late 13th century before its formal dedication in 1300, the cathedral underwent considerable expansion during the 14th and 15th centuries using stone as the primary building material. Severely damaged in the Great Fire of Turku in 1827, it was substantially rebuilt thereafter. As the seat of the Lutheran Archbishop of Finland and a major record of Finnish architectural history, the cathedral remains central to the nation's religious and cultural identity, its noon bells broadcast nationally and its presence integral to Finland's annual Christmas celebrations.
