The Cathedral of the Holy Cross stands on Aghtamar Island in Lake Van in eastern Turkey, a medieval Armenian Apostolic cathedral constructed in 921 as a palatine church for the kings of Vaspurakan. Built by the architect Manuel in the distinctive style of Armenian architecture, the structure later served as the seat of the Catholicosate of Aghtamar. Following the Armenian genocide in 1915, the cathedral was abandoned and eventually converted into a museum. The site holds tentative World Heritage status.
