The Azadi Tower, formerly known as the Shahyad Tower, stands at Azadi Square in Tehran as a 45-metre monument clad entirely in cut marble. Designed by architect Hossein Amanat following his competition-winning proposal, the tower exemplifies Pahlavi-era architecture infused with Persian classical and post-classical traditions. Commissioned by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to commemorate the 2,500-year celebration of the Persian Empire, it was completed in 1971 and has since become one of Tehran's most recognizable landmarks, once marking the city's westernmost entrance. The tower anchors the Azadi Cultural Complex, which includes an underground museum, and remains designated as part of Iran's national heritage.
