Baelo Claudia was an ancient Roman town situated on the shore of the Strait of Gibraltar near present-day Tarifa in southern Spain. Established around 2,000 years ago as a fishing village and trading hub, the settlement originated at the end of the 2nd century BC and quickly became an important economic center in the Mediterranean. The archaeological remains reveal that the town possessed considerable wealth from its inception, prospering particularly during the reign of Emperor Claudius. However, a series of earthquakes contributed to the town's gradual decline, and it was abandoned by the 6th century. Today, Baelo Claudia stands as a designated cultural heritage site, offering valuable insight into Roman commerce and urban life in Hispania.
