Miróbriga was an ancient town in the westernmost part of Lusitania, first occupied during the Iron Age—possibly from the 9th century BCE, certainly by the 5th or 4th century—and transformed into a Roman city following colonization. Located near Santiago do Cacém in southwestern Portugal, the site is now recognized as Castelo Velho de Santiago do Cacém and was first identified in the 16th century by André de Resende. The Roman settlement features a forum that occupied much of the earlier indigenous town's area, surrounded by a commercial district. Among its best-preserved remains are two side-by-side bath complexes (Balneae), among Portugal's finest, along with domestic peristyle houses, a single-arched bridge, and a circus located some 500 meters south—the only circus in Portugal whose entire ground plan is fully known. The city remained occupied through the Early Middle Ages.
