The Castle of Silves, located in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, stands as one of the peninsula's finest surviving examples of medieval Arab fortification. Built upon earlier Roman or Visigothic foundations, possibly including a Lusitanian castro, the castle was substantially expanded and developed by Arab occupants between the 8th and 13th centuries. Its Moorish architecture reflects centuries of Islamic rule and engineering, earning it official recognition as a National Monument of Portugal in 1910. Today it serves as both a cultural heritage site and an active archaeological location, preserving crucial evidence of the region's complex medieval history.
