Located in Sintra, near Lisbon, the Palace of Sintra—also known as the Town Palace—stands as Portugal's best-preserved medieval royal residence. Built beginning in 1400, the palace represents a remarkable synthesis of architectural styles, blending Mudéjar, Manueline, Moorish, and Gothic elements that reflect the cultural layers of medieval Portugal. Inhabited more or less continuously from the early fifteenth century through the late nineteenth century, it remained a functioning royal residence for nearly five centuries. Today it operates as a historic house museum and is recognized as a National Monument of Portugal, forming part of the Cultural Landscape of Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts visitors from around the world.
