Perched dramatically atop the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, Pena Palace is a Romanticist masterpiece blending Neo-Manueline, Moorish Revival, and eclectic architectural styles. Designed by German architect Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege and constructed beginning in 1838, the palace stands as one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism worldwide. Its distinctive polychromatic towers and ornate stonework rise prominently enough to be seen from Lisbon on clear days. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Portugal's Seven Wonders, the palace serves as a national monument and continues to host state occasions for the Portuguese presidency and government officials.
