Banská Bystrica Castle, also known as a barbican, stands in the centre of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, as part of a fortified city complex rather than an isolated stronghold. The ensemble comprises multiple structures including the late Romanesque Church of the Virgin Mary, dating to the second half of the 13th century and the complex's oldest building, along with Matthew's House, the Slovak Church, the town hall, and a rectory. The fortifications consist of stone walls with bastions and an entrance gate with a barbican through which the area was accessed. The parish church was originally ringed by a cemetery, which once contained a Romanesque ossuary that stood until the 19th century.
