The Barrière d'Enfer, or "Gate of Hell," was a pair of neoclassical tollhouses designed by Claude Nicolas Ledoux that once controlled passage through the Wall of the Farmers-General at what is now Place Denfert-Rochereau in Montparnasse, Paris. Part of Ledoux's ambitious architectural program for the city's fiscal boundary, the structure exemplified the austere geometric principles of neoclassical design. Though the tollgate has been destroyed, it remains classified as a historical monument, and its former location is commemorated in the modern plaza's name.
