The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, Spain, is a Catholic pilgrimage church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and revered as the first church ever erected in her honor. Built beginning in 1681 under architects Felipe Sánchez, José Felipe de Busiñac, and Francisco Herrera the Younger, the structure was predominantly completed by 1872, displaying a layered architectural character of Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. The basilica serves as co-cathedral of Zaragoza and draws pilgrims from across the Christian world to venerate its miraculous image of Mary, believed by tradition to have appeared to Saint James the Great during the early spread of Christianity in Spain—the only reported Marian apparition said to have occurred before her Assumption. Many of Spain's monarchs, foreign rulers, and celebrated saints, including Teresa of Ávila and Ignatius of Loyola, have paid devotion at this shrine, which local tradition connects to Spain's apostolic heritage and is recognized as a bien de interés cultural.
