The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady in Regensburg—known locally as the Alten Kapelle—stands as Bavaria's oldest Catholic place of worship, founded by Holy Roman Emperor Henry II in 1002. According to tradition, it occupies the site of an ancient Roman temple to Juno, where Charlemagne had ordered a chapel built in the early medieval period. The present structure represents a remarkable palimpsest of architectural periods: its Ottonian foundations underlie a Gothic fabric, which was then lavishly transformed in the 18th century with Baroque and Rococo decoration. The interior showcases some of Europe's finest rococo ornamentation, executed in the distinctive style of the Wessobrunn school. Elevated to the rank of basilica minor by Pope Paul VI in 1964 at the direction of Bishop Rudolf Graber, this collegiate church remains one of Regensburg's most significant religious monuments.
