The Basilica of the Visitation of Our Lady in Werl, Germany, is a Catholic church built between 1904 and 1906 in the Neo-Romantic style under the direction of Wilhelm-Sunder Plaßmann, chief architect of the Diocese of Münster. Consecrated by Bishop Karl Joseph Schulte on 24 May 1911, the basilica houses a twelfth-century statue of the Virgin Mary known as the "Consolation of the Afflicted," which received papal coronation by Pope Pius X in 1911. The church was elevated to minor basilica status in 1953 by Pope Pius XII through the decree *Quam Omnes Gentes*. Since 1848, the Franciscans have served as guardians of the pilgrimage site and its adjoining nineteenth-century convent. The basilica underwent significant restoration in the early twenty-first century, particularly from 2002 to 2003, and is designated as an architectural heritage monument in North Rhine-Westphalia.
