Perched on a hill above Würzburg, the Käppele—formally the Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of Mary—is a Rococo masterpiece designed by Balthasar Neumann and built in 1750. This small but architecturally significant church served as a Catholic pilgrimage destination and was maintained by the Capuchin order until 2014. The structure exemplifies the elegant, ornamental aesthetic of mid-eighteenth-century German Baroque ecclesiastical architecture and stands as a recognized architectural heritage monument in Bavaria.
