The Pilgrimage Church of Wies, located in Steingaden in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, is a Roman Catholic oval Rococo masterpiece completed in 1754. Designed in the late 1740s by the brothers Johann Baptist and Dominikus Zimmermann—the latter of whom settled nearby for the final eleven years of his life—the church represents the major achievement of their architectural partnership. Dedicated to Saint Joseph and belonging to the diocese of Augsburg, the Wieskirche exemplifies the exuberant ornamental language of late Baroque Rococo style. Its architectural significance earned it designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, recognizing its outstanding contribution to European ecclesiastical design.
