The Borkum Großer Leuchtturm, or Great Light, stands 60 meters tall on the western shore of Borkum Island in Lower Saxony's Leer district, serving as a vital landfall light for the Ems estuary and the port of Emden. Built in brick during the summer of 1879 in the remarkable span of six months following a fire that destroyed the previous lighthouse, it ranks as the world's third tallest brick lighthouse and the twenty-fourth tallest traditional lighthouse overall. The tower features a directional continuous light at 46 meters displaying white, red, and green signals toward three separate directions, functioning both as an active navigational aid and day mark. Protected as an architectural heritage monument in Lower Saxony, the lighthouse remains open to visitors seasonally and is accessible to the public daily from April through October and select afternoons during winter months.
