Bouillon Castle is a medieval fortification perched on a rocky spur within a sharp bend of the Semois River in Wallonia, Belgium. First mentioned in 988, the castle has occupied its strategic site for far longer than written records attest. In 1082, it passed to Godfrey of Bouillon, who sold it to Otbert, Bishop of Liège, to fund his participation in the First Crusade. The castle was substantially modernized in the late 17th century when Vauban, the military architect of Louis XIV, adapted it for heavy artillery. Today it stands as an exceptional heritage property of Wallonia.
